Are Zuidzeeparels more valuable than Tahitian at the same maat?
Generally yes. Zuidzeeparels have the thickest nacre of any gekweekte parels (2–6 mm vs Tahitian 0.8–2.5 mm), and Pinctada maxima takes 2-3 years to produce a harvestable parel versus 18-24 months for Pinctada margaritifera. At 12mm AAA, white Zuidzeeparels typically command $200-500 per parel groothandel.
What's the difference between Australische and Indonesische Zuidzeeparels?
Australische farms (mostly Western Australië) tend toward whiter, more uniformly round parels. Indonesische farms (Sulawesi, Lombok) produce a wider color spectrum and more baroque shapes. Both are Pinctada maxima; kwaliteit is comparable at AAA grade.
How thick is the nacre on a 12mm Zuidzeeparels?
AAA 12mm Zuidzeeparels have nacre thickness of 2–4 mm minimum. We measure nacre via candling and X-ray for any parel over $300; certificates note the measured nacre depth.

These come from the zilver-lipped variant of Pinctada maxima, primarily Australische and Indonesische farms.
