Why pearl value needs more than one input

There is no reliable price-per-millimetre formula for pearls. Specialists assess an interacting set of factors: pearl type, size, shape, colour, lustre, surface, nacre quality and, for strands or pairs, matching. A large pearl with weak lustre or serious surface damage may be less desirable than a smaller pearl with a bright, sharp reflection.

Which factor matters most?

Lustre is especially important because it records how light returns through the nacre, but no factor works alone. Size must be judged within pearl type, and rarity only creates value when the overall quality and demand support it. Matching can add substantial labour and scarcity to earrings and strands.

Are cultured pearls real pearls?

Yes. Cultured pearls form in a mollusc with human intervention and are real pearls. They are different from imitation beads made from glass, shell, plastic or composite materials. “Cultured” does not mean fake, and “natural” has a specific gemological meaning that normally requires laboratory evidence.

How to use the estimate responsibly

Treat the result as an educational retail orientation, not an appraisal or resale promise. Provenance, treatments, condition, drill holes, mounting quality, brand, laboratory reports and the market where an item is sold can change the figure materially. Second-hand and auction prices also differ from replacement retail value.

When should you request an appraisal?

Use a qualified independent appraiser when insurance, inheritance, tax, resale or a high-value purchase depends on the result. If natural origin or treatment is important, a recognised gem laboratory may be necessary. Bring documentation and avoid cleaning an old piece aggressively before it is inspected.
