How pearl colour is described

Body colour is the dominant overall colour of a pearl. Overtone is a translucent secondary colour visible over that body, while orient describes a more iridescent play of colours. Separating those terms makes descriptions more useful than labels such as “black” or “white” alone.

Do black pearls occur naturally?

Tahitian cultured pearls naturally occur in dark body colours, often grey rather than jet black, with green, blue, rose, aubergine or peacock-like overtones. “Black pearl” is a broad trade phrase; a precise listing should describe the actual body colour and overtone.

What colours do South Sea pearls have?

South Sea cultured pearls from Pinctada maxima are associated with white, silver and natural golden colours, with many tones between them. Mollusc variety, environment and pearl structure influence colour. Colour alone never establishes origin or quality.

Why screens and photographs shift colour

Lighting temperature, camera processing, white balance, monitor calibration and the surrounding background can all alter what you see. The explorer builds vocabulary and shows plausible combinations; it does not analyse a photograph or certify that a colour is natural.

Can colour reveal a treatment?

Not reliably. Some treatments may create concentrations or patterns visible under magnification, but many are subtle and need laboratory testing. If natural colour materially affects the price, ask for clear disclosure and appropriate documentation rather than relying on a screen match.
