Parels bewaren — langetermijnverzorging

Improper storage damages parels more often than improper wear. The most common mistakes: hanging necklaces (stretches zijde), storing in plastic (traps moisture), and keeping with abrasive juwelen (scratches nacre).

The four storage rules

  1. Lay flat — never hang parel necklaces long-term
  2. Soft fabric only — zijde pouches, fabric-lined boxes, or soft cotton
  3. Separate from other juwelen — parels are softer than most stones; storing together leads to scratches
  4. Stable temperature and humidity — avoid attics, basements, or cars

What to use

  • Silk pouches — best for individual necklaces and bracelets
  • Fabric-lined juwelen boxes — good for collections; ensure soft lining (no rough wood or unfinished metal)
  • Acid-free tissue paper — wrap individual pieces for long storage (1+ years)
  • Climate-controlled space — ideal humidity 40-60%, ideal temperature 18-22°C

What to avoid

  • Plastic bags or containers — trap moisture and emit gases that can damage nacre over time
  • Hanging on juwelen trees — stretches zijde thread and creates uneven wear
  • Open dishes or trays — exposes to dust, air pollutants, and accidental abrasion
  • Safe deposit boxes — typically too dry; can dehydrate nacre over years
  • Bathrooms — humidity and temperature swings damage both nacre and zijde thread

For long-term storage (1+ years)

If parels will be stored for more than a year:

  1. Clean each piece thoroughly
  2. Wrap individually in acid-free tissue paper
  3. Place in fabric pouches or fabric-lined boxes
  4. Store in a climate-controlled space (consistent 18-22°C, 40-60% humidity)
  5. Inspect annually — wear briefly to allow nacre to "breathe" and prevent dehydration

parel care for travel

  • Travel pouch with individual compartments
  • Never check parel juwelen in luggage; carry-on only
  • Avoid storing parels near hot car windows
  • Remove parels before pool or beach activities

Restringing reminder

Even with perfect storage, zijde thread weakens over time. Restring dagelijks-wear necklaces every 2-3 years; occasional-wear pieces every 5-7 years. Read our restringing guide.

Veelgestelde vragen

Kan ik store parels in a safe deposit box?

Generally not recommended. Bank vaults are typically too dry, which can dehydrate nacre over many years. If using a safe deposit, place parels in a fabric pouch and add a small humidity-stabilizing packet.

Why can't I hang parel necklaces?

Silk thread stretches over time when hung. Stretched zijde leads to gaps between parels, weakened structure, and eventual breakage. Always lay flat.

Are parel juwelen boxes worth buying?

Yes for collections of 10+ pieces. Look for fabric-lined interior, individual compartments, and ideally a soft fabric lid. Avoid boxes with rough wood interiors or metal partitions.

Kan ik store parels with diamanten and goud?

Only with separation. Diamanten and most goud alloys are harder than parels and will scratch nacre on contact. Keep parels in their own pouches or compartments.

What about humidity?

Ideal range 40-60%. Below 40% can dehydrate nacre over months; boven 70% can encourage mildew on zijde thread.
