Witte versus gouden Zuidzeeparels

White and golden Zuidzeeparels come from the same species — Pinctada maxima — but from two natuurlijke kleur variants of the oyster. The price, origin, and aesthetic differ.

Two variants of one species

zilver-lipped Pinctada maxima produces white Zuidzeeparels. The mantle (inner shell tissue) carries pale pink and zilver pigments deposited into the nacre. Result: white parels with subtiel pink, zilver, or cream ondertonen.

goud-lipped Pinctada maxima produces golden Zuidzeeparels. The mantle carries warm yellow-to-goud pigments. Result: parels in tones from pale champagne through deep 24K-geelgoud.

Both variants are the same species genetically; the color differs by individual oyster lineage. Farmers select donor mantle tissue from particularly-colored oysters to influence the resulting parel color.

Origin differs by variant

Golden (goud-lipped) Filipijnen, Indonesië Jewelmer (Filipijnen), Indonesische farms

kleur depth grading

Within each variant, color depth grading affects price:

  • White variant: pure white > white-pink > cream-leaning. Pure white with pink ondertonen commands the premium.
  • Golden variant: deep 24K goud > medium goud > light champagne. Deep 24K commands 30–50% meerprijs over light champagne.

Price premium

At the dezelfde maat en gradering, golden Zuidzeeparels command 30–50% meerprijs over white. Reasons:

  • goud-lipped Pinctada maxima is rarer than zilver-lipped (less of the species, smaller production area)
  • Demand for golden South Sea exceeds supply, particularly in Asian markets
  • The deepest goud tones are even rarer — only specific farms and lineages produce them reliably

Indicative pricing for AAA 12mm round:

  • White South Sea: $300-700/parel
  • Golden South Sea: $500-1,200/parel
  • Deep 24K-tone golden 12mm: $800-1,800/parel

Best use voor each

witte Zuidzeeparels suit: classical bridal juwelen, white-on-white luxury, traditional parel strands, settings in witgoud or platinum.

gouden Zuidzeeparels suit: warm-toned juwelen, complementary settings in 18K geelgoud, modern statement pieces, avond wear with warm color palettes.

Can you mix white and golden?

Yes — "ombre" strands alternate from white at the slot to deepening goud at the center. The visual effect is striking, and the two parel types complement each other since they share maat, shape, and glans characteristics.

Veelgestelde vragen

Zijn Zuidzeeparels dyed?

No. The goud pigment is natural, deposited by the goud-lipped variant of Pinctada maxima. Be cautious of "golden" parels priced significantly below market — those are typically dyed white South Sea or zoetwaterparels.

Do golden Zuidzeeparels fade?

No. The goud color comes from the natural pigments in the nacre layers. With proper care (avoiding harsh chemicals), the color and glans remain for generations.

Which holds value better, white or golden?

Both hold value well in resale markets, but golden Zuidzeeparels (particularly the deep 24K tones in 13mm+ sizes) have appreciated sneller than white over the past decade — driven by demand from Asian luxury markets.
