Zuidzeeparel koopgids — wit & goud
Zuidzeeparels are the largest commercially-cultured saltwater parels in the world. They come uit Pinctada maxima, native to the Indo-Pacific waters of Australië, Indonesië, the Filipijnen, and Myanmar. This guide covers everything you need to choose the right Zuidzeeparels.
1. Two natural variants
Pinctada maxima exists in two color variants:
- zilver-lipped — produces white parels with subtiel pink and zilveren ondertonen. Australische and Indonesische origin.
- goud-lipped — produces golden parels from champagne to deep 24K-tone yellow. Filipijnse and Indonesische origin.
Both are the same species; the color difference comes from natural mantle pigments.
2. Why Zuidzeeparels cost more
- Cultivation period: 2-3 years per parel (vs 18-24 months for Tahitian, 10-18 months for Akoya)
- Nacre thickness: 2–6 mm (the thickest of any gekweekte parels)
- Harvest yield: roughly 50% mortality during cultivation; only 5% reach AAA grade
- maat range: 9–20 mm, the largest beschikbaar in gekweekte parels
3. maat and price
| maat | White AAA | Golden AAA |
|---|---|---|
| 9–10 mm | $120-300 | $180-450 |
| 11–12 mm | $250-600 | $400-900 |
| 12–13 mm | $400-1,000 | $700-1,500 |
| 14–16 mm | $1,000-3,000 | $1,500-4,500 |
4. White vs golden
Choose white South Sea for: classical bridal juwelen, white-on-white luxury, traditional parel strands, settings in witgoud or platinum. Choose golden South Sea for: warm-toned juwelen, modern statement pieces, complementary settings in 18K geelgoud, avond wear.
5. Origin differences
Australische farms (Broome region) produce the whitest, most uniformly round parels — premium tier. Indonesische farms produce the widest color spectrum and more baroque shapes — best volume tier. Filipijnse farms specialize in golden Zuidzeeparels with the deepest 24K tones — premium for golden.

Veelgestelde vragen
Zijn Zuidzeeparels dyed?
No. The goud pigment is naturally produced by the goud-lipped variant of Pinctada maxima. Beware of "golden" parels priced significantly below market.
How thick is the nacre?
AAA Zuidzeeparels have nacre thickness of 2–6 mm — by far the thickest of any gekweekte parels. This is why they have such depth of glans and last generations.
Australische vs Indonesische South Sea — which is better?
Australische: whiter, more uniformly round, premium tier. Indonesische: wider color spectrum, more baroque shapes, better value. Both are AAA-kwaliteit at the top of their respective ranges.
Welke is most popular for Zuidzeeparels?
11–13 mm is the most-requested commercial range. Large enough to read as a statement, accessible at AAA grade.
Are Zuidzeeparels a good investment?
AAA gematcht South Sea strands have appreciated steadily, particularly in larger sizes (13mm+) and rare ondertonen (deep goud, zilver-blue).
